The Franco-British Cycle Plan
The project

The Cycling Plan takes on a double approach

European: "Euro Velo" (Euro Bike)
nationale : "Schéma National de Véloroutes".
(National Cycling Route Plan)

Objective of the Cycling Plan

The objective is to promote a coherent network of Cycling routes and to develop an environmentally friendly tourist product.

The tourist planning of the Picardy coastline is based on a well thought-out and concerted strategy, which has been implemented for more than 30 years. In order for this development to be sustainable, the capacity to fill its spaces must be questioned and, consequently, the manner in which to travel.

The “all motor vehicle” period now seems to be over. The consumption of areas by this type of transport is too great for it to be continued to be associated with the enhancement of our region.

In order to perpetuate this development, thoughts on the control of the tourist flow have begun and the bike, still considered yesterday as a leisure activity amongst others, is becoming a “key” element in the policy of alternative travel.

The final product

> continuous infrastructure between Pas-de-Calais and the Seine Maritime :
70 km of off-road cycle tracks at the “Authie à Mers-les-Bains” site itself.

> the bike :
a privileged means of travelling on the Picardy Coast.

> creation of a complete tourist product :
travel – accommodation/food – site visits

The first sections of the off-road cycle tracks were created in 2001 thanks to the European Interreg II programme.

The plans are being continued within the framework of the Franco-British Cycle Plan, supported by the Interreg III programme.
